When Xavi Simons and Jorrel Hato can make Chelsea debut after transfer breakthrough

Send Push

Jorrel Hato is the latest player to join Chelsea this summer. He follows Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Joao Pedro in making permanent moves to Stamford Bridge.

Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr also came in after agreements reached with Sporting CP and RC Strasbourg earlier this year. Andrey Santos has returned from loan (Sarr has since taken his place at Strasbourg again, filling up the three spots with Mike Penders and Kendry Paez, another to briefly be integrated before being sent out).

Estevao Willian is now a Chelsea player and, as of Monday, will start training with his new teammates.Hato, then, is in quite a long list of arrivals at Cobham.

He becomes the second natural left-back in the squad, behind Marc Cucurella. Chelsea value his ability to act as a centre-back and switch between the two.

Due to Benoit Badiashile's fitness issues, being able to deputise across the backline is a big draw to the 19-year-old. It will also make Hato's chances of getting minutes in a settled defence easier. Both Cucurella and starting left centre-back Levi Colwill were near ever-present last season.

Hato, therefore, will get opportunities. He is also in place for what is essentially going to be all of Chelsea's pre-season. Although he did not play a part in the Club World Cup, which was a precursor for pre-season, hence why Enzo Maresca committed to using such a strong squad without as much rotation of fresh faces as had been initially expected, Hato will get the same two weeks of rapid fire conditioning and work that his teammates will.

The rest of the group have been on holiday for three weeks after the win over Paris Saint-Germain.Hato had been preparing with Ajax for their new season, which may well stand him in good stead to be ahead of the returning Chelsea players this week.

Without the time for a tour, Chelsea will play against Bayer Leverkusen and Milan at Stamford Bridge on Friday and Sunday in a bid to build as much match sharpness as possible. They will have to rely on some of the Club World Cup grooving carrying over without the chance to really get things together on the pitch.

It would be a relatively quick turnaround for Hato to be announced on Sunday to playing in front of his new fans on Friday evening, but Chelsea cannot afford to let a game slide without offering him some minutes. The same will be true for Xavi Simons if he joins this week.

Chelsea and RB Leipzig are still in talks over a deal. The move has caused frustration with seemingly no progress being made. However, all parties are still confident of it being completed.

There is almost a full month of the summer window to go but Chelsea will be keen to get their final pieces of business over the line before the season starts.Simons was not involved in Leipzig's friendly against Atalanta on Saturday with the focus on getting him to England, but matters are not yet closed.

If Chelsea and Leipzig do come together in the early stages of this week then there will be undoubted attention on Simons ahead of the Milan game, specifically. That comes just seven days before the opening day clash with Palace at SW6.

Chelsea will hope that Hato and Simons are both available by then at the latest. Hato could be playing on Friday night, though, whilst that looks increasingly ambitious for Simons.
