A few months after introducing it for smartphones, Google is now making the AI Mode feature available for Android Tablets. According to media reports, this feature is available in the beta version 16.30 of the Google app and allows tablet users to use Gemini-powered AI search tools already available on the phone.
The tablet version of the app was lagging in functionality due to the larger display, but with the latest beta update, AI mode can now be accessed directly from the home screen or Discover tab. This is the reason why tablets have now come closer to Android phones in terms of AI capabilities.
How does AI Mode work on tablets?
After testing on Pixel tablets, the AI mode shortcut now appears at the top of the Home and Discover tabs, and this feature can also be easily accessed through the Pixel Launcher and Home Screen Widget. Its visibility can be managed through Google App Settings.
Tapping the shortcut opens the same AI prompt bar you find on phones, including options to upload images and use Google Lens. While the interface isn't fully optimized for tablets, portrait orientation offers a more practical layout than landscape mode.
What is Google AI mode?
The AI mode is based on Google's Gemini 2.5 multi-AI model and is designed to make search more natural and interactive. Users can ask, upload or take photos using Google Lens and then ask questions based on the visual content. The system combines shopping results, local information and data from Google's Knowledge Graph to answer your question.
