Starlink, operated by Elon Musk's company SpaceX, has officially launched its high-speed satellite internet service in Sri Lanka. This move is a major milestone in the expansion of Starlink in South Asia. Earlier, the company started its services in Bhutan and Bangladesh.
Starlink made this announcement from its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, saying, high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Sri Lanka! The service is based on more than 6,750 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which provide much faster and lower-latency internet connections than traditional geostationary satellites.
The picture will change in rural Sri Lanka.
This technology is considered very important for developing countries like Sri Lanka, especially in rural and remote areas where internet connectivity has long been a major challenge. Starlink's entry is expected to give new impetus to education, telemedicine, and local businesses. The government's rapid regulatory approval of Starlink makes it clear that Sri Lanka is very serious about digital infrastructure.
What is the situation in India?
While neighboring countries are taking advantage of this service, Starlink is still facing regulatory hurdles in India. However, there has been some progress in this recently. The Government of India has issued a GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) license to Starlink. Now, only the final approval from IN-SPACe and the process of spectrum allocation are left. Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has indicated that Starlink's service can start in the next two months, provided the conditions related to security and data localization are met.
