AIIMS and Harvard-trained gut doctor suggests 3 foods to reduce risk of cancer

While there’s a genetic component that determines how likely one is to be diagnosed with cancer, a lot of risk can be lowered if you eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle. Taking to YouTube, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, suggested three foods to add to your plate to lower the risk of cancer.

Carrot

According to Dr. Sethi, carrots are a significant source of beta carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, that reduces inflammation and oxidative stress and improves immunity. They are also high in fibre, which is great for improving metabolism and digestive powers, thereby keeping colon and stomach cancers at bay. The doctor advised consuming cooked carrots, as cooking makes it easier to absorb beta carotene.

Garlic

When crushed or chopped, garlic yields allicin, a sulfur-containing compound that is known to protect DNA and slow down abnormal cell growth. However, he also warned against cooking garlic at very high heat, as it destroys allicin, and let the garlic sit for ten minutes after crushing for the best benefits.

Broccoli

According to Dr. Sethi, broccoli, a nutritional powerhouse, is rich in sulforaphane, a natural compound that’s shown to block cancer cell growth. Broccoli sprouts can have up to 100 times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli.

Who Is Dr. Sethi?

Dr. Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist based in California, stands as a bridge between cutting-edge Western medicine and time-honored Eastern philosophies. With an academic background rooted in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions—AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford—he brings over twenty years of medical expertise to his practice.

Over the course of his career, he has crafted a holistic and transformative approach to health, one that seamlessly unites modern scientific insights with a deep respect for traditional wellness principles. His philosophy goes beyond treating symptoms, focusing instead on building sustainable habits that nurture long-term vitality and balance.

At the core of Dr. Sethi’s work lies his unwavering belief in the power of the gut—a belief shaped by years of research and clinical observation. He stresses that gut health is not merely a digestive concern but the foundation upon which the entire body’s well-being is built. According to his approach, the gut microbiome—the vast community of bacteria and microorganisms living within us—plays an essential role in influencing not just physical health, but also mental clarity and emotional stability.
