'Someone stole ₹1 lakh worth of gold from my daughter's body,' alleges mother of Bengaluru stampede victim

The mother of 13-year-old Divyanshi B S, the youngest victim of the June 4 stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory celebration, has filed a police complaint alleging that jewellery worth ₹1 lakh went missing from her daughter’s body.

Ashwini Shivakumar, 35, lodged the complaint on Thursday, stating that Divyanshi was wearing a gold chain and a pair of earrings when her body was taken to Bowring Hospital following the incident. However, the ornaments were no longer there when the family received her body.

The family initially didn’t notice the missing jewellery but later realized it was gone. The complaint suggests that the ornaments may have been stolen while the body was at the mortuary. “There is a lot of sentimental value attached to the ornaments as a sign of what was worn by my daughter in her last moments,” said Shivakumar, a resident of Yelahanka, while urging authorities to investigate.

Divyanshi, a Class 9 student, was passionate about dance and aspired to become a veterinarian. Her mother shared that the teenager had been excited to attend the RCB event in hopes of seeing her cricket idol up close. “She wanted to see him ( Virat Kohli) up close. Her wish cost her her life,” Shivakumar had said after the tragedy.

“She was a very mature person. In fact, she used to inspire me on how to handle situations in life,” she added. “Not just Virat Kohli, she knew the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and even other players,” said Shivakumar, who was present with her daughter during the event.
