Navi Mumbai: A tragic road accident on the Mumbai-Goa Highway at Karnala Ghat claimed the life of one passenger and left four others critically injured, with 26 sustaining minor injuries. The incident was reported on Sunday night at 9.30 pm near the Balaji Kitchen Hotel in Karnala, Panvel.
The luxury bus, operated by Omkar Travels, going to Sawantwadi from Dahisar when it overturned near Karnala. The driver of the bus, identified as Narendra Mohite (37), resident of Ghatkopar, allegedly fled the scene following the accident but was later traced and arrested by the Panvel Taluka Police.
“The bus driver was arrested on Monday morning and produced before the court. He has been granted police custody for 2 days," said a police official from Panvel Taluka police station.
The deceased has been identified as Amol Krishna Talwadekar (30), a resident of Ratnagiri, who was traveling with his sister Neelam Mayur Sawant (32) and her one-year-eight-month-old daughter.
Sawant, a resident of Ramabai Chawl, Ghatkopar, is the complainant in the case and in her police statement held the driver responsible, citing reckless and irresponsible driving as the cause of the accident.
According to the complaint registered at the Panvel Taluka Police Station, the driver lost control of the bus due to overspeeding and negligence, resulting in the vehicle overturning. All injured passengers were rushed to MGM Hospital in Kamothe, and, four among them are in critical condition and are undergoing treatment. The rest have sustained minor injuries.
Mohite, was arrested under Sections 281, 125(a)(b), 184, 134(a), 134(b), and 105 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
