Stomach bloating is not always caused by gas or food problems. Sometimes it can also be a sign of a serious disease. Therefore, if this problem is occurring repeatedly, do not be careless and get it checked at the right time.
Difference between Gas and Bloating: Often when the stomach swells, people consider it to be just the effect of gas or heavy food, but if this problem is happening repeatedly or the stomach feels bloated even without eating much, then it can also be a sign of some serious disease. Sometimes flatulence is a warning of internal changes happening in the body, ignoring which can prove to be harmful in the future.
Stomach bloating is a common problem that troubles most people at some point or the other. We often consider it to be just a result of gas or bad eating habits. But when this problem starts happening repeatedly, the stomach feels bloated even without eating heavy food, or home remedies do not provide relief, then it can also be a sign of some serious disease.
Flatulence can be a symptom of these diseases.
Former Dr. Ananya Gupta of the Department of Gastroenterology at Delhi AIIMS explains that many diseases can cause flatulence. Irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS) is a major disease among them. This is a chronic, long-lasting problem related to the intestines. In this disease, the person repeatedly complains of stomach cramps, gas, diarrhea or constipation, and bloating. There is no single cause of IBS, but stress, poor eating habits, lack of sleep and hormonal imbalance can cause it. In IBS, flatulence can be felt immediately after eating and this condition sometimes makes one very uncomfortable.
2 The second common reason is lactose intolerance , which occurs in people whose body cannot digest milk and milk products properly. Actually, lactose is a type of sugar found in milk, which requires an enzyme called lactase to digest. If this enzyme is not produced in the body, then problems like bloating, stomach ache, diarrhea or gas start occurring after drinking milk. Many people in India are not aware of this and they keep ignoring it thinking it to be normal gas.
3 The third serious reason can be any liver related disease , such as fatty liver or liver cirrhosis. When the liver's functioning decreases, toxins start accumulating in the body and the stomach starts filling with water, which is called Ascites in medical language. In this condition, the stomach not only swells but also feels hard. Also, symptoms like fatigue, vomiting, loss of appetite and yellowing of the skin or eyes can also be seen.
4 The fourth major reason is ovarian problems in women , such as ovarian cysts or PCOS. If a woman experiences bloating every month, along with irregular periods, pimples on the face or weight gain, then these may be signs of changes in the ovaries or hormonal imbalance. Ovarian cysts can cause bloating as well as heaviness and pain in the stomach.
Be sure to consult a doctorIf you have constant complaints of bloating , loss of appetite, vomiting, sudden weight loss or feeling of hardness in the stomach, then do not take it lightly. This may not be just gas but a symptom of some serious disease. In such a situation, instead of treating yourself, it is better to get it checked by a doctor.
