SEAL to launch pre-monsoon care for destitute on streets

Mumbai |With the monsoon all set to arrive in hardly a mere couple of months, SEAL Ashram in Panvel is unfurling a resolute campaign to shield the destitute people on the streets of the metropolis.

With meticulous planning, SEAL operations have commenced in Navi Mumbai, recognizing the imminent challenges that the onset of the monsoon may pose. The harsh reality is that those on the streets are particularly vulnerable during this season, with many facing dire circumstances that could even lead to fatalities due to the worsening of their physical conditions.

The initiative, 'RESCUNITE 2024,' is a pivotal component of the overarching programme 'Before the Rain Arrives'. This has united volunteers from SEAL alongside numerous social and cultural activists from across the metropolis in the spirit of collective action and compassion.

The operations are aimed at rescuing the destitute individuals who face challenges even in having the food provided to them. SEAL's mission extends beyond mere rescue; it includes rehabilitation and ultimately reuniting these individuals with their families. The organization's focus is on the destitute genuinely struggling on the streets, and not on beggars or anti-social elements who fall outside SEAL's purview.

The efforts under the banner of 'Before the Rain Arrives' are set to commence formally on May 22. Volunteer Laiji Varghese said a multitude of samajs and cultural collectives in Navi Mumbai will join hands in the investigation, rescue and rehabilitation endeavors, with a focus on different regions within the area.

Lalji added that the genesis of this initiative stemmed from witnessing numerous individuals succumb to the wrath of the monsoon. To date, the organization has successfully reunited approximately 500 such individuals with their families.

Pastor KM Philip of SEAL emphasized that the operations were meticulously coordinated to ensure that the destitute were brought to the SEAL Ashram, where they received the necessary care and treatment before being reunited with their families.

"Many of those living on the streets seek refuge at SEAL because they struggle to feed themselves. SEAL provides them with the care they need, rehabilitates them and sends them home transformed. These are the individuals SEAL is dedicated to assisting, and the elation they experience upon recovery and reuniting with their families is indescribable. This, ultimately, is SEAL's core mission," Philip added.
