Ellen DeGeneres says she's staying in the UK 'for good' after confirming she left the US because of President Donald Trump. The 67-year-old currently lives in the Cotswolds with her wife Portia de Rossi, 52, after relocating to England in 2024.
Trump won the presidency for a second time in November of that year and was inaugurated in January 2025. Originally the couple planned to split their time between the UK and their home in Montecito, California - where high profile celebrities like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oprah and Gwyneth Paltrow - also live.
But a day after hearing the news that Trump had been re-elected, Ellen and Portia decided to live in the UK permanently. And the couple, who tied the knot in 2008, are even considering getting remarried over here after talk gay marriage could be reversed in some parts of America.
In a new interview at the Everyman theatre in Cheltenham, the comedian and presenter was asked by broadcaster Richard Bacon if it was true she moved because of Donald Trump. "Yes," she replied.
She continued: "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis. And I was like, 'He got in'. And we're like, 'We're staying here'."
Ellen went on to reveal her love for the UK and how life was "just better" in Britain. Since living here Ellen has been giving glimpses of her new rural life on social media, including her 'house sheep', which have since been sold after they kept escaping.
She said: "It's absolutely beautiful. We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture - everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life.
"It's clean. Everything here is just better - the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.
"We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time. But I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks."
Speaking about the threat to same sex marriage in the US, Ellen shared: "'The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage.
"They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here.
"I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we're there, I think there's a hard place to say we have huge progress."
