For many homeowners, damp and mould issues aren't usually a concern until they become visible and unsightly. However, leaving them unresolved can lead to huge repair bills and even health issues. That's why a property expert is raising the alarm over three tell-tale signs that might require further inspection.
Kevin Barzegar from Kaybridge Residential, said: "Too many buyers get caught up in the aesthetics and forget to look for the warning signs that matter. Damp and mould issues can affect not only your wallet, but your family's health too."
1. Paint bubbling or uneven finishes
When inspecting a potential property, don't simply focus on the polished surfaces. Take a moment to observe the paintwork - specifically looking for bubbling, peeling, or uneven finishes.
"Water trapped in walls will always find a way to show itself," said Kevin. "Fresh paint might cover the problem temporarily, but it can't hide the telltale signs forever."
2. Musty or sweet odours
A musty, earthy, or even sweet, stale smell can be a sign of hidden mould growth, often in spaces that don't receive much airflow, like basements, bathrooms, or lofts.
Kevin suggested: "If you walk into a room and something doesn't smell right, trust your instincts. Sellers often try to mask these odours with air fresheners or candles, but the underlying smell will still come through."
3. Condensation on windows when rooms look well-ventilated
"Condensation that persists even when windows are open or ventilation seems adequate is a red flag," explained Kevin. "It often points to moisture coming up from the ground or trapped within the building structure."
Check the window sills for signs of water damage, such as peeling paint or soft wood. These subtle clues can reveal whether the issue has been ongoing, indicating a deeper damp problem that needs to be dealt with.
