Crystal Palace may astonishingly halt Liverpool's pursuit of Marc Guehi after a deal for Igor Julio fell through on deadline day, adding an unexpected twist to the saga.
The Premier League champions have been negotiating with Guehi since last week and finally reached a £35million agreement for the highly-regarded England star on Monday. However, Crystal Palace's inability to secure a loan deal for Igor could lead to a nerve-wracking conclusion to deadline day for Liverpool.
The deal is now at risk as the south London club faces challenges in their attempt to replace Guehi, according to The Mirror, with a deal for Igor falling apart and a move for Jaydee Canvot still not finalised.
This is despite Guehi having undergone at least part of a medical in preparation for his transfer to Anfield after Liverpool and Palace agreed terms for a player who will be out of contract in less than a year.
Palace face a significant dilemma as head coach Oliver Glasner - who has guided the club to FA Cup victory and a major European competition for the first time in their history - has been against selling his captain from the outset. The Austrian appreciates Guehi both as a player and a dressing room leader and has expressed his wish to retain the England centre-back.
He is thought to be one of the figures who will decide whether Guehi is sold or kept at the club.

His resolve to keep hold of his players was strengthened by the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, and this sentiment has only grown stronger on deadline day due to the club's struggles to find a suitable replacement for his captain.
The Eagles are set to sign teenage French defender Canvot from Toulouse, but Glasner views him as a long-term project rather than an immediate starter, while a loan deal for Igor Julio from Brighton has fallen through.
Palace CEO Steve Parish has previously discussed the club's financial obligations towards players who have joined Selhurst Park in recent years, and he believes it would be financially irresponsible not to sell Guehi if their valuation is met - something Liverpool have now done. Glasner will undoubtedly be disappointed if Guehi leaves and no suitable replacement is found.
Meanwhile, there are increasing concerns in south London that a move to Bayer Leverkusen could be on the horizon following Erik ten Hag's dismissal earlier on Monday after just two Bundesliga games in charge.
Glasner achieved remarkable success at Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the Europa League, and Leverkusen chiefs are under significant pressure to make a high-profile appointment that will satisfy supporters, especially after the much-publicised arrival of former Manchester United manager Ten Hag, who quickly proved to be a poor fit at the BayArena.
