A teenager has been handed a 14-year prison sentence following a savage attack on an 84-year-old man.
Zepheniah Dufeal, 18, launched an unprovoked assault on an elderly gentleman he didn't know after they both alighted from the same train at Edmonton Green station in North London. Dufeal attacked the 84-year-old, landing a second blow to his head that caused him to fall.
The teenager then stood over his victim, continuing to deliver a series of brutal blows just after 8pm on July 16, 2024, reports.
The horrifying onslaught included a slap to the face, stamping on the man's head twice and even throwing the elderly man's baseball cap away. Dufeal concluded his horrific assault by leaving his critically injured victim on the ground and exiting the station, as reported by the British Transport Police.
Thankfully, another passenger discovered the victim, alerted staff, and he was promptly rushed to hospital. The man received treatment for a brain bleed, a fractured skull, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung.
The entire terrifying incident was captured on CCTV, which officers reviewed during their investigation. One officer recognised Dufeal after an ID had been briefly shared.
Dufeal was arrested the following day at his home on Church Street, Edmonton. He pleaded guilty to Grievous Bodily Harm with intent (GBH) and was sentenced to 14 years in prison on May 21 at London Inner Crown Court.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell, who leads Major, Serious and Organised Crime, said: "This was an exceptionally violent and unnecessary attack on an elderly man. Dufeal acted in such a horrific manner and with such brutality, it is only luck that the victim was able to survive such a horrifying attack.
"I want to thank the victim and his family for their support throughout this investigation and trial. I hope they feel some sense of comfort and reassurance knowing this individual has been convicted as a result of his cruel and heartless actions.
"Violence of any kind is never tolerated on the rail network and we work hard to ensure offenders like this are brought to justice. If you ever need us please text 61016 to report crime and remember to call 999 in an emergency."
