The Chase's Mark 'The Beast' Labbett struggled to hide his nerves after one lucky player managed to bank a staggering sum in a tense head-to-head round. During Friday's visit (October 17) to the ITV studios, host Bradley Walsh welcomed four new players onto the teatime show. He introduced Darren, Jodie, Safiyah, and Paul to the viewers at home before they put their general knowledge to the test.
This week, the quartet faced off against Mark 'The Beast' Labbett, who certainly brought his A-game. First up to the podium was Darren from Cornwall, who earned a respectable £3,000 in the cash-builder round.
Unfortunately, he buckled under the pressure and was caught within a matter of minutes. Following in his footsteps, Jodie from Northampton raked in an impressive £8,000 in the cash-builder round.
Like her former teammate, the star struggled to keep calm under the pressure and was also sent packing. But Safiyah from Twickenham broke the cycle when she added a respectable £6,000 to the cash prize after beating the pro quizzer.
Things took an unexpected turn when Paul from Liverpool stepped up to the podium, scoring a measly £2,000 in the cash-builder round. Despite his teammate Safiyah suggesting he take the low offer of -£1,000, he decided to risk it all for the high offer of £84,000.
Surprisingly, he managed to soar his way through to the final with only one incorrect answer pushing him back, bringing their combined total to a staggering £90,000. It was at this point that The Beast began to feel the heat of the competition as he confessed: "It was logically the thing to do there, £84k against £2k, well played."
It was at this point that he joked that ITV bosses needed him to "win" this episode after Paul's impressive score. He chuckled: " It's all about whether you can get into the fun zone, scoring 17.18,19. Having said that, right now the ITV accountant's going, 'You'd better win, Mark'."
It didn't take long before viewers flocked to X - formerly known as Twitter - to share their support for his risky move. One user penned: "Omg Paul played a good game!" as another echoed: "Well that surprised me!! Good work Paul, that's how you play."
A third chimed in with: "£84k that's what I'm talking about go on Paul lad!! Wants to upgrade his and his Mrs cars and goes for the money to do it!! My guy!!"
In the final chase, the team of two managed to correctly answer 12 questions, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to beat the Chaser, who caught them out with just over a minute to spare. The Chase airs on weekdays from 5pm or catch up on ITVX.
