The Trial has arrived on Channel 5 and the gripping legal drama saw plenty of twists unravel in the single hour-long episode. The special followed husband and wife, Dione and David Sinclair (played by Claire Skinner and Ben Miles), who faced interrogation after their daughter Teah (India Fowler) committed a serious crime.

The relentless and unyielding Sarah Willis (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) dug up plenty of dirt from their past. Under Milligan's Law, parents could be charged as accessories if they cannot prove they have raised their child in a stable environment.

Set in October 2035, viewers saw Teah, who was described by her mother as an "Earth Warrior", tell Sarah to relay to her worried parents: "This is on me". While Dione believed her daughter was easily coerced, David seemed to know something that perhaps Dione didn't.

David was less than co-operative, denying access to certain records, all the while claiming Teah was a "caring, confident and loving person". As Sarah explored the couple's checkered past, it was revealed David, a "proud socialist", had been arrested three times for tresspass.

It was clear there was some tension between the two parents when it came to their political allegiances. Also, while discussing their first impressions of one another, Dione failed to say it was love at first sight, and this is where the cracks in their marriage began to show.

It was unveiled Dione had chosen to end their relationship after six months of dating, and had two prior terminations of pregnancy.

The third pregnancy with Teah was not planned, and she had considered a third termination. David, on the other hand, really wanted a child.

Dione had opened up to Teah about her true feelings on the pregnancy, saying she had initially regretted bringing a child into the world.

As Dione had gone back to work just one week after her birth, David became Teah's main care provider.

Little did they know at the time their actions would one day influence Teah to take drastic measures.

What did Teah do in The Trial?

Teah's parents had hired a child psychologist as they knew Teah was not like other children. She would often dream about the end of the world and became obsessed with global warming when she was just five.

She was an antinatalist at age nine and went on to join the Earth Warriors, with her father attending some demonstrations and protests with her.

It transpired Teah had attempted to kill the unborn child of a woman her father had been having an affair with, although she was unsuccessful.

The woman was a mixed martial arts expert and managed to escape, and she had been seven months pregnant as a result of the affair.

When Teah confronted her parents in the courtroom, she claimed she had not tried to kill anyone but was instead trying to "liberate the parasite inside her womb".

"There is a difference," she said. "One is murder, mine; it was an act of mercy." She felt "to bring another child into this broken world, it's beyond wrong".

Teah pleaded guilty to attempted child destruction, and the act alone carried a life sentence.

Her parents were heartbroken as Teah said she wanted to serve her sentence in a punitive coma, being induced into a permanent state of sleep.

She said it would be a blessing not to have to watch the world die in front of her.

Teah had scrawled 'So long and thanks for all the fish' in her holding cell - a line from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Sarah explained: "It's the dolphin's final message to humanity when they realised the Earth was doomed to destruction."

Sarah revealed in during a search of the couple's home that a very specialised mobile device had been found, and it came to light David had been working as a police informant.

David said if he had not cooperated by providing certain information, Teah would have been arrested.

However, he had been under the suspicion of the Earth Warriors for over a month and they had asked Teah to spy on her dad, and it was Teah's fingerprints that were found on the device.

Teah followed her father and tracked his whereabouts, tracing him to an address in Clapton, and it was revealed David had been having an affair.

Both of her parents were charged with gross psychological, emotional and empathetic neglect of a minor. They were remanded in custody pending prosecution.

The Trial is available on My5.
