Amethi: Union Minister Smriti Irani was seen riding a scooter in Amethi as she stepped out to meet the people of the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday. Irani is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Amethi and she won the 2019 elections from the seat by defeating Rahul Gandhi.

Smriti Irani, dressed in a sari, rode her scooter as she met the locals and posed for selfies and pictures. She also interacted with BJP workers and reviewed the situation.

Earlier in the day, Smriti Irani visited Ayodhya and offered prayers at the Ram temple. Earlier, the BJP leader hit out at Rahul Gandhi over his possible visit to Ayodhya before his visit to Amethi, a seat he has represented for 15 years. The Congress is trying to seek votes in the name of Lord Ram, she said.

"They refused invitation for the Ram temple ceremony, and now they want to visit the Ram temple as they feel this stunt will help them garner votes in the elections. Jo Ram ka nhi, woh kaam ka nhi," she said.

The Congress is yet to announce a candidate for the seat, once considered a Gandhi stronghold. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) fielded Ravi Prakash Maurya from Amethi constituency.

Amethi Lok Sabha Election 2024Amethi has been more than just a constituency for Congress as it has been associated with the party's bigwigs. It has been a Nehru-Gandhi Bastion since 1967.

Sanjay Gandhi won from Amethi in 1980 and after his death, his brother and Rahul Gandhi's father Rajiv Gandhi won the Amethi seat in 1981. He represented the seat till 1991 until his assassination. Later, Sonia Gandhi represented the seat in 1999 which was then taken over by her son Rahul Gandhi in 2004.

The Gandhi scion represented the seat till 2019, however, in a huge blow to the party, he lost the seat to Smriti Iran over a margin of 55,000 votes.

Amethi's electoral battle is scheduled for the fifth phase on May 20.
