Prayagraj: A man involved in the murder of a 24-year-old woman on Sunday night was injured and arrested by a joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Pipri, Karari, and Paschim Sarira police of Kaushambi district after an encounter on Tuesday.

The accused was identified as Surendra Singh Patel of Bhagwatpur. He was admitted to the district hospital for treatment.

Police have also seized two knives, one pair of scissors, one sharp-edged weapon, one countrymade pistol of 0.315 bore, along with two live and two used cartridges and some clothes from his possession.

Police said the young woman was found brutally murdered at her house in Kolhua village on Sunday night following which an FIR was lodged under section 103 (1) of BNS against unknown persons.

After carrying out investigation and compiling evidence, the police arrested Surendra Singh Patel and brought him to Paschim Sarira police station on Tuesday. Surendra confessed to his crime and told police that he concealed the clothes that he wore at the time of the incident in a forest area.

When the police teams took him to the aforesaid spot to recover the clothes, the accused took out an illegal weapon from a bag and opened fire at the police party. The police shot back in retaliation resulting in injury to the accused.

Surendra told police that he had fallen for the slain woman and used to talk with her on the phone as well as visited her house. On April 27, he again visited her house when she was alone at her house and expressed his desire to marry her.

When the woman spurned his proposal, the accused, in a fit of rage, attacked her with a knife and other sharp-edged weapon, stabbing her multiple times on the chest and neck. The accused also severed the veins in both her hands and escaped. He then washed the blood-stained clothes and concealed them at a nearby field.
