Gurgaon: The ABVP unit of Govt College Sector 9 protested on Wednesday against contaminated water being provided to students after they found lizards, mosquitoes and moths inside one of the water coolers on the campus.
When the students went to the administration with the issue, they were allegedly told to get the cooler cleaned and fixed themselves.
In response, the ABVP unit carried out a demonstration and placed water pots across the college to ensure that students had access to clean drinking water. To mark their protest, they also placed a water pot in the cabin of Rajesh Kundu, additional principal and principal in-charge.
Arpit Mittal, general secretary, ABVP, said, "If the issue is not resolved within the next 10 days, we will organise another major demonstration. The college has not been maintaining hygiene. There are three water coolers in the college and all were found dirty."
After photos of the dirty water coolers started circulating on college groups, students expressed their shock and said they were worried for their health.
"We could have got extremely sick after drinking this water. Some of us may even have fallen sick but did not realise how," said a student on the condition of anonymity.
Students also expressed disappointment over the college management's dismissive attitude to the problems they faced."The management repeatedly tells us that they will look into the matter we raise but there is never any redressal. Even after we raised a complaint about the dead lizards and insects found in our water cooler, they changed the water but did not clean the cooler," said Mittal.
Meanwhile, Kundu said that the situation was being blown out of proportion. "Following concerns and complaints from the students, we made sure all water coolers are thoroughly cleaned.
