Sizzling half-centuries from Gill, Buttler set up 38-run win; Prasidh, Siraj too impress

AHMEDABAD: In a match dominated by opening batters, it needed a magical piece of fielding to separate the two teams. Just as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma (74 off 41 balls; 4x4, 6x6) were threatening to explode in a chase of 225, Rashid Khan the fielder intervened with a superb running catch to alter the course of the match.

The Afghan maverick may not be among the wickets this season, but his fielding has been spot on. He ran more than 30 metres to his right from deep square leg before pedalling back two steps and taking a diving catch off Prasidh Krishna ’s bowling to send the dangerous Head back to the pavilion.

The dismissal broke the back of SRH’s chase. Despite Abhishek’s valiant effort and Heinrich Klassen (23) stabilising the innings with a 57-run partnership, SRH ended at 186/6, falling short by 38 runs.

Who's that IPL player?

Pacers Prasidh Krishna (2/19) and Mohammed Siraj (2/33) delivered incisive spells in the middle and death overs as the Titans got their campaign back on track after the shellacking they had received at the hands of the Vaibhav Suryavanshi-inspired Rajasthan Royals earlier in the week.

With the bat, Titans maximised the Powerplay with some frenzied hitting and got to an imposing 224/6 despite losing a flurry of wickets in the death overs.

Invited to bat first, the Titans altered their own template, smashing 82 in six overs. At the forefront was skipper Shubman Gill (76 off 38b; 10x4, 2x6), who began the onslaught by flicking pacer Mohammed Shami over square leg for a nonchalant six.

Some serious bashing began in the third over as promising left-hander Sai Sudharsan (48 off 23b; 9x4) thrashed Shami (0/48) for five fours as the hosts raced to 36 after three overs.

Gill then lofted Pat Cummins over mid-wicket for a sublime six as the Titans reached 53 in four. Sudharsan then struck allrounder Harshal Patel for 18 in his first over as the Titans posted their highest Powerplay score of 82.

Soon after the Powerplay ended, leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari produced a googly which Sudharsan edged to Heinrich Klassen. Three sedate overs followed before Gill and Buttler (64 off 37b; 3x4, 4x6) blasted 17 off another Shami over as the former Titan had a forgettable day.

Gill though, was run out at the striker’s end in the 13th over after Buttler flicked a delivery to short fine leg and set off. It was a close call, as replays seemed to suggest that Klaasen’s gloves disturbed the stumps first, but the third umpire was convinced.
