NEW DELHI: In a landmark tribute to its maiden Everest ascent in 1985, the Indian Army has successfully scaled Mount Everest once again. This time with a 22-member team that reached the summit at 5 am on May 27, 2025.
The mission, called the Silver Jubilee Everest Expedition, marks 40 years of Army mountaineering legacy and showcases the elite endurance of its Adventure Wing.
Led by Lt Col Bhanoo Pathak , with Maj Mehak Mehta and Maj Anirudh Yadav among key climbers, the expedition operated under the overall command of Lt Col Manoj Joshi. The team included 3 officers, 6 Junior Commissioned Officers, and 13 Non-Commissioned Officers, supported by 28 Nepali Sherpas.
The 32-member group, including a Medical Officer and Nursing Assistant, departed India on April 12, reaching Everest Base Camp by April 23. After acclimatisation and battling severe high-altitude conditions, the team launched their final push late on May 26, successfully summiting early the next morning.
Among the climbers, Hav Tundup Namgail of 5 Ladakh Scouts made headlines with a record ascent in just four hours, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and high-altitude fitness.
The summit also coincided with a historic moment in global mountaineering, as Kami Rita Sherpa completed his 31st ascent of Everest, adding further significance to the day.
The Indian Army’s feat stands as a powerful symbol of courage, discipline, and teamwork, echoing the spirit of its 1985 pioneers while inspiring a new generation of adventurers.
