NAGPUR: At least Rs 60 lakh in cash stashed in sacks with “cloth” labels was being smuggled in the parcel rake of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express on April 15, before the consignment was intercepted by RPF, Mumbai, when the train reached Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
The seizure followed random checks by RPF during enforcement of the model code of conduct . Of the 250 parcels loaded in the brake-van of the train, only eight went through an x-ray scanner while the cloth-labelled parcels stuffed with cash were given safe passage without the mandatory scan, top railway sources said.
Central Railway has since suspended three employees and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the contractor who had lease on the parcel van.
