NEW DELHI: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday backed Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi's criticism of the Supreme Court’s order on stray dogs, urging sterilisation and vaccination instead of “fear-driven measures.”
“Treating stray dogs as a nuisance to be ‘removed’ is not governance — it is cruelty. Humane societies find solutions that protect both people and animals,” he wrote on X.
“Sterilisation, vaccination, and community care work. Fear-driven measures only create more suffering, not safety,” the Congress leader added.
In his social media post, Congress MP Gandhi had called the court’s directive a “step back” from science-backed and humane policy.
"These voiceless souls are not 'problems' to be erased. Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe - without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand," he posted.
On Monday, the Supreme Court directed authorities in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi to immediately start picking up stray canines from all localities and shift them to animal shelters. The directions also apply to Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad, which fall under the NCT.
The ruling drew sharp criticism from animal rights organisations and dog lovers, who staged a protest in front of India Gate. Police detained several demonstrators.
Celebrities including John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor and others have also voiced opposition to the court’s order.
