In her first television interview since her husband Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Erika Kirk, widow of the Turning Point USA founder , opened up about her grief with Fox News host Jesse Watters.
Speaking on a special edition of Jesse Watters Primetime titled “Erika Kirk: In Her Own Words,” Erika reflected on the grief, her final moments with Charlie, and the faith that has sustained her since his passing. She revealed that she has never watched, and never intends to watch, the video of his assassination.
“I never saw the video, I never will see it,” Erika shared with Fox news, holding back tears. “There are certain things you can never unsee. I don’t want my husband’s public assassination to be one of them. I don’t want my kids to ever see that,” she added.
Erika opened up to the host about her grief and recalled that she never got the chance to kiss him goodbye that fateful morning, unaware it would be the last time she would see him.
"That night, he [Charlie] was so excited. I mean, he was like I can't wait, it's going to be the best," Erika Kirk said.
“He came in and he grabbed that [wedding ring and necklace] and then he left. I didn't even get to give him a kiss goodbye,” she recalled. Erika had stayed back in Arizona to care for her mother, who was experiencing a medical issue. While at the doctor’s office, she and her mother were watching a video of Charlie tossing hats at Utah Valley University when she received a call that shook her.
“Mikey [McCoy] called me. I'll never forget, him just being like, Charlie's been shot. He's been shot, get the kids. Get security, get the kids, get the kids, he's been shot. I sprinted out of her treatment centre and just collapsed in the middle of the parking lot" Erica said as she broke down in tears.
Charlie Kirk, 32, was fatally struck in the neck by a single round from a bolt-action rifle on September 10.
She also revealed that, despite safety concerns, Charlie had refused to wear a vest, saying, “If they're going to get me, they're gonna get me. He wasn't afraid.”
Erika insisted on seeing Charlie immediately upon arriving in Utah. Recalling his last expression, she said, “He had this smirk on his face. That smirk to me is that look of: you thought you could stop what I've built. You thought you could do that by murdering me. You got my body. You didn't get my soul.”
Erika Kirk will receive the first-ever Charlie Kirk Legacy Award at the seventh annual Fox Nation Patriot Awards in New York on Thursday.
Asked if she feels safe, Erika replied, “What are they going to threaten me with? Going to heaven sooner to be with my husband? I'm not afraid. Charlie wasn’t afraid either. We never lived in fear. If we did, we wouldn't get anything done.”
